Hello Christine,
I just had to comment on your latest posting! Please forgive me, but seriously – no BULBS!!!??? There are no native BULBS???? This is incorrect. Native Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum), Turk’s Cap Lily (Liliium superbum), Canada Lily (Lilium canadense) , Wild Leek (Allium tricoccum), Atamasco Lily (Zephyranthes atamasca )…I could go on and on, and that is just the true bulbs. If you include corms and bulb-like rhizomes (which most folks do not differentiate from bulbs), there are lots more including our Trilliums (Trillium sp.), Blazing Stars (Liatris sp.) and many others.

What about creating wildlife cover by grouping fallen branches so wildlife has cover from weather and predators. Also, try planting a mix of native forbs and grasses which also provide cover and food for wildlife.

Thank you for posting this important and inspiring person , John Quigley. He spoke so eloquently at the expert panel discussion posted at U tube in May 2011 and I agree we need to get these facts out to more people. I hope many will watch this U tube 54 minutes long and only about 350 had watched it so far-- it is totally important right now-- distribute widely now that Governor Cuomo of NY has signaled that he might permit some wells after the State legislature went home for 2012 on June 21. We need to stop this drilling for so many sensible reasons.

Climate changes can't be stopped.

Climate has always changed, and we, the mankind, has always adapted and therefore organized our societys to withstand the climate changes. It's really easy, adapt or die.

Check out the great National Geographic documentary "Journey of Man" and also the webb of "Globe of Human History": https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/lan/en/globe.html

If you know your history, you know that the water levels under some periods has been 100 meters higher and lower than today. Could our modern technological civilisation cope with it? Yes, if we prepare.

With prepare I mean not only "recycle, ride bikes, etc". That alone should not be enough. We have to invent new technologies for transport, energy and food production.

Just saw this article on your blog. It is an excellent reminder about the dangers of spiked and wire fences to deer as they roam to find food. Thanks for publishing this.
Presently there was an incident in Chestnut Hill in November, 2011 when several fawns were impaled and one deer died from a spiked iron fence. Please take measures to insure that your fences are safe for deer to leap over. It is the humane measure to take.
